I have been putting this off because I have been dreading writing this review. I love Stephen King’s work. The Shining was the pivoting point for my love for books. King sparked something in me that would set in motion my over the top addiction to books. So with that being said it gives me no pleasure in scoring this book 1/5. There where parts of the book that would keep me interested but I I was board most of the time. I felt like King could have done a much better job on this book. The plot had such a good concept but King really dropped the ball on this one.
The book starts out outside the main characters childhood home when a man he would later know as the reverend introduces himself to the child. After a freak accident claimed the lives of his beloved wife and son, the reverent is removed from his position at the church. I wont spoil that for you. Just know that it was one of the better point sin the book.
The child in the book grows up to become a musician in different bands and ends up addicted to drugs. When he is dropped from yet another band because he cannot show up on time and is bringing the band down, he sets off to find his next high. Arriving at a carnival, a unexpected friend from his past helps him kick the addiction. This friend? Well, it’s no other than the Reverend. Later, they would meet again as the revered holds the key to curing this rockstars addiction.
As you can see, there is a lot going on in this book. Which is nice but, there are so many parts of the book that could be different. I just feel like King could have done far better on the book. I would have loved to see more thought put into the reverend. But, please don’t let my review keep you from reading any of Kings works. There are ones that I would recommend. The Misery, The Shining, Cell, Blaze, Under The Dome. The list just goes on! But unfortunately, this book will not be added to my to be read again pile.
